Not For Waste. Melbourne
Understanding root causes and
delivering
practical waste solutions
for businesses,
buildings,
& properties
across Melbourne.
Not For Waste is a not-for-profit company offering waste consultation services and solutions tailored to your day-to-day operations and challenges. Every dollar we generate is reinvested into community waste initiatives, growing a network for professionals and researchers, contributing to better waste outcomes across Melbourne, and caring for our shared community.
Not For Waste acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land which we work and live on today, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. As an organisation, we recognise that caring for Country extends beyond the way we manage waste and resources. We are committed to maintaining, and respecting the knowledge, culture and connection to Country — past and present.
Our Strategic Framework
-
Our approach looks at your whole work system to understand how waste is generated, managed and reduced across your business or property. We want to gather as much information as possible before conducting an assessment. Looking at available waste and operational data, researching existing and developing services, and most importantly, directly speaking with the people who interact with the waste systems every day.
These conversations help us understand what the data alone may not: how waste is actually generated, where processes get difficult, possible constraints staff face from day-to-day, and ultimately, what services and support we can provide or connect you to better manage your waste.
-
Food and organic waste commonly represents a significant, by volume and weight, component of commercial waste streams. We want to ensure that food and organics waste systems are optimized for day-to-day operations. Whether you’re looking to introduce FOGO into the waste system or looking to optimize current structures, we are there all the way.
Diverting food and organic waste from landfill has significant environmental and operational benefits. When food and organics are correctly separated and collected, they can be converted into compost and renewable energy rather than contributing to harmful landfill gas emissions.
Melbourne already has the infrastructure and services in place to make this happen. From FOGO kerbside collections to commercial organics processing facilities, the systems exist — the opportunity lies in ensuring businesses are connected to and correctly utilising what is already available to them.
-
We turn your operational changes into verified environmental and compliance assets. By tracking your venue's diversion metrics behind the scenes, we deliver automated monthly impact reports that quantify your greenhouse gas reductions and resource savings. These audit-ready scorecards give you the precise data needed for green marketing, corporate reporting, and local council mandates.
-
Waste is an inevitable byproduct of a busy, thriving venue; it is never a source of shame. Taking a proactive approach to managing that waste is a conscious privilege and a powerful act of community leadership. Seeking support to strengthen our local ecosystem is a badge of pride, not a failure. We provide a judgment-free, collaborative framework that transforms your daily operations into a lasting positive contribution to our shared environment.
Who We Are
Not for Waste delivers in-depth waste management solutions beginning with understanding root causes of your waste challenges — workflows, costs, and day-to-day operations all shape what happens at the bin. Our Vision
Not For Waste exists to support businesses, buildings, and people in operating with continued care for the city’s environment. By working directly with frontline members, managers and waste providers to understand root causes of their waste challenges, we try to turn good intentions into practical everyday procedure.
Beyond our waste consultation services, Not For Waste has a broader vision for the industry. We believe there is a real opportunity to bring the waste and sustainability community together and creating a space where services, projects, research, and infrastructure can be showcased, discovered, and supported.
The waste industry does important work that often goes unseen. We want to change that by creating a strong network, building on progress and fostering a collaborative mindset to managing waste across our community.

Meet the Founder
Benny Huang
With over 15 years of hospitality experience spanning his family’s food business, commercial restaurants and venue management across Melbourne, he understands how hospitality businesses actually operate. The pace, pressures, and reality of what happens at the bin during and at the end of a busy service.
Studying Environmental Science and Sustainability at RMIT gave that experience a new lens. What Benny had always understood as a practical challenge, managing waste in a fast-paced environment, became a deeper question about behaviours, systems, and why good intentions are sometimes difficult to translate into consistent practice during operation.
Benny expanded his experience through waste auditing, resource recovery and waste education work across Melbourne, including businesses, commercial buildings and venues. Across every sector, the same thing stood out. The right infrastructure, the right intentions, but a gap in between looking to be filled.
Not For Waste is my answer to that gap. Built for Melbourne’s businesses, buildings, and venues. Grounded in the belief that the right behaviour doesn’t happen easily or by accident. It happens with the right support and system.
